Dirk Nowitzki's attorney: Cristal Taylor is not pregnant

Cristal Taylor, the incarcerated former fiancée of Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki, is not pregnant – contrary to what she and her attorneys had been saying since shortly after her arrest in May.

Nowitzki's attorney, Robert Hart, said he received medical records Thursday from Missouri correctional facility officials that show Taylor was administered a pregnancy test Monday. The result was negative, Hart said, citing the medical record.

Matthew Fry, Taylor's Missouri attorney, said he can't say for certain whether Taylor was ever pregnant or whether she miscarried while in jail.

Mavericks officials said Nowitzki learned the news while in South Africa for the NBA's Basketball Without Borders program. He was not available for comment Thursday.

"As we suspected, we did not believe her story," Hart said of the latest, and perhaps most important, twist in the four-month saga that began with Taylor's May 6 arrest at Nowitzki's Preston Hollow home.

But while the overriding question was answered Thursday, others remain. Why did Taylor's Dallas County jail medical record, dated May 8, show that she was tested there and found to be pregnant? What, if anything, happened after that?

On July 6, Taylor's Missouri attorney asked a St. Charles County judge to lower Taylor's $25,000 cash-only bond, citing her "higher-risk" pregnancy due to her age, 38, and a January miscarriage.

Last week, after Taylor was sentenced to five years in prison for violating probation in a decade-old forgery and theft case, Fry said he had been going by the Dallas jail medical records to which Taylor gave The News access by signing a release form May 22.

"Any comment I ever made about her pregnancy or any miscarriages would have been based on medical records that I had from Dallas County, as I would never take a client's word for anything," Fry reiterated Thursday.

"Is it possible that she miscarried in the St. Charles County jail? Yes. However, I do not have medical records to indicate either way on that. Nor do I know whether there would even be medical records if she miscarried."

On July 24, in response to a petition filed by Nowitzki's attorneys, Dallas family court Associate Judge Randall Grubbs ordered pregnancy and DNA testing, saying, "We know the first one has to happen. The other one may be moot."

Hart said he was the one who communicated the news to Nowitzki on Thursday. ""He is obviously relieved that this matter has been cleared up," he said.

"Good news on Dirk's ex," tweeted Mavericks owner Mark Cuban on his Twitter feed Thursday. "No surprise. Can't wait [for] training camp."

Taylor could not be reached for comment. Reached at her St. Louis-area home, Taylor's mother, Shirley Taylor, declined to comment, adding, "How dare you call me" and "I don't want to get my [blood] pressure up."

Cristal Taylor may not be done making headlines, however. Her sister, Carol Jackson, told The News in late May that she was planning to write a book.

And Taylor faces additional legal issues in the coming weeks, with the possibility of added prison time. Last week, St. Charles Judge Nancy Schneider credited Taylor with a year of probation served, effectively reducing her sentence to four years. She also received 103 days' credit for time served – and with good behavior, Fry said, Taylor could be out in 14 months.

But Fry told The News on Thursday that Taylor also faces probation violation charges in St. Louis County, stemming from felony forgery and theft charges there, to which she pleaded guilty in 1999.

"She is still facing six years in St. Louis County," said Fry, who said he will represent her in that case, adding that "there is no set court date at this time."

Also unresolved, in Texas, is a 2006 theft of service charge in which Taylor is accused of failing to pay for $10,000 worth of cosmetic dental work in Beaumont.
